Meet the UDSC Interns: Learning about the needs of Worcester residents

Abby Crowley's internship, summer 2006
Alison CrowleyGovernment and sociology major Abby Crowley '07 is spending summer 2006 interning for Worcester City District 4 Councilor Barbara Haller, who chairs the Standing Committee on Housing & Neighborhood Revitalization for Worcester. Haller's district includes the Main South neighborhood, of which Clark is a part.

Abby, who grew up in a suburban town, describes herself as "intrigued by city life, concerned with dispersion of wealth, and interested in policies that have been implemented to help low income people." As Haller's assistant, Abby will be attending neighborhood and city-wide meetings, and getting to learn first hand about the needs of Worcester residents, especially those in District 4.

Abby has participated in a variety of community service activities since enrolling at Clark. In her capacity as president of the community service club Rotaract, a branch of the Worcester Rotary club, she has worked with the Worcester County Food Bank and the Main South Community Development Center. She volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in Charleston, South Carolina and Miami, Florida. Her participation in Red Cross disaster services classes made it possible for her to work at Red Cross national headquarters in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Abby is also a certified Emergency Medical Technician.

Abby plans to enroll in Clark's fifth-year free master's program in public administration and then serve in Americorps before finding a position with an urban development agency.

Funding for her internship is through the Lois MPA '78 and Robert '49 Green Undergraduate Internship.

Abby has agreed to share with us, via email, news of her experiences and reflections on her internship this summer. Check the listings in the gray box (top right) or visit her blog to see what she's doing!
