Email journal: June 13, 2006, Zambia After my first month on the field the project has gone through some considerable changes. While my initial goal was to verify whether the community of Mwembezhi was interested in Frierean based literacy program, from the very beginning the idea of literacy was met with a great deal of enthusiasm. In the first week after my arrival, I interviewed various community members to gauge how best to begin the pilot classes. However, it quickly became clear from their responses that the question was not whether to have literacy classes, but how to begin a program that could be sustained after my departure. Since then I have been working to find both local teachers and managers who can be trained to start new literacy circles, not only in Mwembezhi, but also in other rural communities surrounding Lusaka. Fortunately I found a local non-profit, The People’s Action Forum, who already has extensive experience managing and training literacy circle facilitators. They have generously agreed to assist the fresh managers and facilitators in getting the new program on its feet. At the moment my main tasks are answering questions that the new managers have, strengthening their communication with the People’s Action Forum, and helping them to identify other communities in which they might like to work.
