Email journal: June 2005, Pretoria, South Africa

I've been in SA for ten days now, and things are going very fast. On my arrival in Johannesburg, I was greeted by the CEO of the Ethics Institute of South Africa where I'm interning. Professor Willem Landman drove me to my residence in Pretoria and, during the ride from the airport to Pretoria, he briefed me on the political climate in SA. First of all, let me say that the staff at the Ethics Institute is amazing, very welcoming and helpful. My private accommodation is located in Hatfield, ten minutes away from the University of Pretoria and the Center of Pretoria. I have a room next to Kate, an MBA student from the Monterey Institute in California who is also doing an internship at EthicSA. We live in this huge building with other students from the University of Pretoria.

My arrival in SA was really perfect because it happened right in the middle of a huge corruption scandal involving Deputy President Jacob Zuma and his financial advisor Sheik. While Zuma's advisor was convicted to 33 years in prison, Zuma himself, although not trialed in a court of law, was trialed in the media and by the people. Opinions were divided on whether Jacob Zuma should resign or not. To the joy of a significant number of people, President Mbeki fired Jacob Zuma. This is a historical moment in anti-corruption history and a step forward not only for South Africa but for the whole of Africa, as it shows the president's initiative in fighting corruption. It is one victory for the anti-corruption world.

Aside from the political context, there is still a lot going on in SA. We went out on a company lunch a week ago to a very trendy restaurant called Smoke, where my boss officially welcomed Kate and me to the Ethics Institute. I'm so impressed with Willem Punt and Willem Landman (my bosses); they are incredibly knowledgeable and deeply rooted in the fight against corruption. Part of what they do at the Institute is provide ethics training to senior management of several big companies. Last week we drove to Jobhurg and I was able to attend a five-hour training session that was given to the senior management of SpoorNet, a South African company.

As for my research project, I recently met with the Willem Punt and Willem Landman to discuss what I will be doing. They gave me a lot of good ideas and I actually have a meeting with Willem Punt in seven minutes to submit the final draft of my plan. I'll be back soon with a lot more!! Oh, and pictures are coming soon as well. Stay tuned!!!
