Email journal: July 21, 2006, Ghana

The last 2 days has seen a barrage of travel for me in Ghana, mostly in the Eastern region. Yesterday, I went back to Aburi on a fundraising trip for the youth program I work with, Catch Them Young. We received 200 dollars towards a 500 dollar down payment on the purchase of a youth center on the camp. If anyone out there is willing to help, donations would be most welcome.

We then toured the Aburi botanical gardens, which was started by missionaries a little over 100 years ago. It contains trees planted by several former heads of state of Ghana, as well as Queen Elizabeth II, the Prince of Wales, and the Presidents of Hungary and Romania.

Today I visited the capital of the Eastern Region, Koforidua, to obtain a permit to leave Ghana for a planned visit to Togo. The service at this immigration center was much better than that in Accra, although it was interesting that one of the officers spent about 30 minutes copying the pages of my guidebook on Ghana. I then took a short tro-tro (bus) ride to what is considered one of Ghana's best waterfalls, Boti Falls. The scenery there was quite stunning. I returned back to Accra late and am now writing from a 24 hour internet cafe after having a few beers with one of the Liberian refugees at a sidewalk bar in Osu, one of the more trendy and western parts of town.
