| Dr. McCoy received an A.B. from Cornell University in 1971, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in 1973 and 1976, respectively. He has been at Clark since 1990.
Current Research and TeachingA specialist in American political and intellectual history, Dr. McCoy teaches a wide range of courses at Clark focusing on early American history from the colonial era through the Civil War era of the mid-nineteenth century. He is currently working on a parallel/comparative intellectual biography of Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln that follows directly from his two previous books: a general study of political economy in Revolutionary and Early National America, and a partial biography of James Madison that, by focusing on his retirement, explores the transmission of republican values across generations in nineteenth-century America.
