Current Research and Teaching

A specialist in American political and intellectual history, Dr. McCoy teaches a wide range of courses at Clark focusing on early American history from the colonial era through the Civil War era of the mid-nineteenth century. He is currently working on a parallel/comparative intellectual biography of Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln that follows directly from his two previous books: a general study of political economy in Revolutionary and Early National America, and a partial biography of James Madison that, by focusing on his retirement, explores the transmission of republican values across generations in nineteenth-century America.

Selected Publications

"An 'Old-Fashioned' Nationalism: Lincoln, Jefferson, and the Classical Tradition," Journal of the Abraham Lincoln Association , (Winter 2002).

The Last of the Fathers: James Madison and the Republican Legacy . New York and Cambridge, England: Cambridge University Press, April 1989.

Winner of two major awards: the Dunning Prize by the American Historical Association and the New England Historical Association Book Prize.

The Elusive Republic: Political Economy in Jeffersonian America . Chapel Hill: the University of North Carolina Press, 1980.
