Current Research and Teaching

In all of the classes I teach, I want students to learn how to express their ideas in elegant prose and complete crafted essays. At the same time, I hope students will reflect on their writing processes, becoming ever more articulate about the writing choices they make. These goals carry over into the work I do on campus with writing program faculty, faculty across the disciplines, and the consultants of the Clark Writing Center.

My newest research considers how theoretical and cultural conceptions and constructions of time affect teaching and learning. In my new collaborative book project (to be published by Utah State University Press in 2006), my co-authors and I consider themes of time, tricksters, performance and ritual in relation to the work of writing centers. We use these themes to record the social and cultural moments (through language, method, and site) that constitute and critique received ideas of tutor training in hopes of guiding writers, tutors, and directors as they strive toward increasingly rich curricular and extracurricular lives in their writing centers.

My article, "Tick, tock, Next: Finding Epochal Time in the Writing Center," will appear in the spring 2005 issue of Writing Center Journal.

I am co-recipient (with Gino DiIorio, Theater Arts) of the Seymour N. Logan Faculty Fellowship. With support of the award we are co-teaching the course Writing Out Loud in spring 2005. I also teach expository writing, reading and writing the essay, and literacy, learning, writing.

As part of a Carnegie Corporation funded initiative, I also work with high school literacy coaches from the Worcester public schools.
