Dr. Townsend received a B.A. and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina in 1974 and 1982, respectively. He has been at Clark since 1982 and is also affiliated with the program in Communication and Culture.

 

 

Current Research and Teaching

Dr. Townsend's research interests are in classical art and archaeology generally, and ancient Greek architecture more specifically. He is also interested in the Classical tradition in art and in the study of material culture as a conveyor of cultural values. Dr. Townsend has recently completed a book entitled The East Side of Angora: Remains Beneath the Stoa of Attalos, vol. XXVII in the series of final publications of the Excavations of the Athenian Agora, the preeminent American excavation in Greece which has worked continuously at the site since 1931.
