PHYS030 - The Nature of Light/Lecture, Laboratory

Follows the historical and philosophical development of our understanding of the nature of light leading to current ideas of space, time, mass and energy. Lecture demonstrations, modern versions of classic experiments and readings from original sources will be employed. Topics, treated qualitatively and with simple algebra, include particle theories of light, electromagnetic waves, emission of light from atoms, special relativity and the famous equation--E=mc^2--and its implications. One laboratory every other week. Fulfills the Scientific Perspective. Mr. Colonna-Romano/Offered periodically
