COMM213 - Social Problems: Claims Making, Media and Construction

Why do certain problems become matters of public concern while others do not? How do advocates and activists frame issues to capture public attention and promote change? How do institutional actors, with different resources, establish claims that move their interests forward? This course addresses these questions by analyzing the process of constructing social problems in both historical and contemporary contexts. Rather than a "laundry list" of specific problems, the course provides an introduction to social problems theory. Its emphasis is the process through which problems are defined and mediated and on the cultural dynamics and media practices that contribute to the credibility of claims. Staff
