- Cool/First-Year Seminar
What is ‘cool’? --- In this FYS we will try to answer this question by developing a ‘cool scale’ – a measurement by use of which we can “measure” how cool people think they are. Constructing this scale will consist of developing scenarios that reflect aspects of ‘cool’ and testing them out empirically with a representative sample of participants. Parallel to the development of this methodological tool we will begin to address in a critical fashion what ‘being cool’ implies for people’s overall well-being, whether ‘cool’ is a particular cultural (American?) emotional style, how it historically came to existence, and how it may be infiltrating other cultures in a globalizing fashion.
