CMLT174 - Islands in the Stream: Puerto Rico and the French Antilles

An examination of Hispanic and French cultures in the Caribbean, with a specific focus on Puerto Rico and the French Antilles. The course begins with an analysis of theoretical issues of colonialism, postcolonialism, and neocolonialism in the region, and follows with an exploration of specific issues such as assimilation, acculturation and alienation. The course then examines the notions of race, gender, language and nationhood through cultural production within and outside of the islands. Ms. Acosta Cruz and Ms. Ferly/Offered periodically.
