IDCE Students

Welcome Class of 2015!

June 1, 2013

We are delighted that you have decided to join IDCE in the Fall and are looking forward to meeting you. In the meantime, we want to direct you to some important online resources to help with your transition.

Welcome Packets.

Information on hotel accommodations, advice on finding an apartment, transportation from the airport or bus stations, and plenty of other useful information can be found in the attached IDCE Student Handbook. Two helpful resources on finding housing are located at

Academic Advisors

You will receive your Academic Advisor’s name and email address in your Clark email account in August.  Please know that our faculty are usually conducting research off campus during the summer and may not have access to email.  You can prepare by reading your program’s handbook and by accessing the fall course listing.

The first day of classes is August 26th.  We recommend that you give yourself plenty of time before that to find housing, banking, and to attend the orientations that are being scheduled for you.

  • International Student Orientation: August 19
  • GISDE Student Orientation: August 13 - 16
  • Clark University and IDCE Graduate Student Orientations: August 20 - 22

You will register for courses during orientation after you’ve met with your Academic Advisor.  You don’t need to wait until then, however, to get course information and to plan your semester!  Please read your program’s handbook:  IDSC Handbook, CDP Handbook, GISDE Handbook, ES&P Handbook and browse the fall course listing.

Fall Retreat - Save the Date!

IDCE 2011 Fall Retreat

All new and returning IDCE students are encouraged to attend our annual Fall Retreat, Saturday August 24 at Camp Aldersgate in N. Scituate, R.I.

Students, faculty and staff will relax and unwind in a serene setting before the semester gets underway.

Cost for students is $40. Reserve your spot at this link by August 15, or clicking on the image on the left. All students will take a bus to the camp and stay overnight.

Finances and Employment

Please know that there are a limited amount of on-campus employment opportunities for graduate students and opportunities will be emailed to your Clark email address in the early part of the fall semester. If you receive financial aid, be in contact with the Financial Aid office to inquire when you will receive any reimbursement funds.  Do not expect to receive these funds until a few weeks into the semester and plan ahead!

Health Insurance and Immunizations

All students are required to show proof of health insurance. If you subscribe to the University’s health plan, you can find information here:  for the August 15th start. Ask financial aid about when and how the university insurance is billed.  If you have health insurance with another carrier, you must complete a waiver, found at this link:

International Students

International students will want to become familiar with Clark University's International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) at Amy Daly Gardner and her staff are very helpful and are a wonderful resource for students with questions regarding international matters.

Again, let me welcome you to IDCE and Clark University! Please feel free to contact me at or at (508) 793-7203 with questions not addressed here or in our additional useful links below.

We'll see you soon!

Best wishes,

Erika Paradis
Director, Student and Academic Affairs for IDCE

Janie Crocco (IDSC '09)

Janie Crocco (IDSC '09) pursued a Compton Mentor Fellowship in which she used what she learned in the classroom while working with a mentor in the field of human trafficking. She notes,

The process of 'doing good' can produce undesirable effects, but careful introspection and planning can result in positive outcomes. Development practitioners and those interested in theorizing about social justice need to take into account how their identities, assumptions, and policies shape their goals as well as the people with whom they interact.
