The department offers course work leading to the Doctor of
Philosophy degree in biology. The department has two major foci for
graduate emphasis: molecular and cell biology or ecology and evolution.
It will be assumed that all students admitted to the department's graduate program will be working toward the doctoral degree, but it may be appropriate for some students to complete the master's program before beginning doctoral work. Students applying for admission to the program must demonstrate adequate preparation in the basic sciences, an overall undergraduate record of B or better, and satisfactory scores in the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Foreign students must demonstrate a minimum standard of spoken English, including a TOEFL score of at least 620. Tuition scholarships and research and teaching assistantships are available to qualified students. Further information can be obtained from the department chair.
